The Allegany County Sheriff’s Office currently has additional personnel
on duty under various grant that it has applied for and received, from
various Federal, State, and Local agencies. A list of these grants and
their intended community benefits are listed as follows.
D.W.I. and Alcohol Enforcement
Awarded each year through the Highway Safety Grant, which is
administered by the Allegany County Health Department. The purpose of
this grant is intended to put additional deputies on patrol, at times
when they would not normally be on duty, in an effort to identify
individuals Driving While Intoxicated or Under the Influence of alcohol
and/or drugs. This grant is also used to target the problem of Underage
Drinking.
Foreign Vehicle Registration Program
This grant is new for 1999 and is funded through the State of
Maryland, which is administered by the Maryland State Police. The
purpose of this grant is intended to fund additional deputies, at times
when they would not normally be on duty, to patrol various areas within
Allegany County, in an effort to enforce the State of Maryland law ,
which requires all vehicles to be registered with the Department of
Motor Vehicles within 30 days of an individual having established
residency within the state.
Electronic Home Detention
The Electronic Home Detention Program of the Allegany County
Sheriff’s Office, Judicial Division is currently being funded through a
grant from the Governor's Office of Crime Control and Prevention. This
program is designed to provide the judges with an additional alternative
to the physical incarceration of offenders by allowing the offender to
be sentenced to detention with in their own home, which will help
eliminate the current nationwide problem of jail overcrowding.
Mental Health Counseling
This program is in its last year of funding through a grant from the
Governor’s Office of Crime Control and Prevention, awarded in
conjunction with the Allegany County Health Department. This program
provides inmates of the detention center with mental health counseling
services by employing a Mental Health Counselor, who works in
conjunction with the detention centers Medical Department and the
facility Psychiatrist.
Family Crisis Resource Center Security
This program is funded through a grant, which is administered by the
Family Crisis Resource Center, to provide security services during
supervised child visitations appointments at the center. The Deputy
assigned monitors the visitation area, along with staff from the center.
