History
One of the primary responsibilities of the Sheriff’s Office is the
protection of the court system. Since 1791, deputies have been assigned
duty within the Circuit Court of Allegany County. One of the main duties
of the deputies assigned here is to maintain order during all criminal
and civil proceedings held within courthouse, while also providing for
safety and protection of the visitors who have business at the court
house on a daily basis.
Staff
Currently, the Circuit Courthouse is staffed by two sworn deputies
and two court security officers. Deputy Benny Smith is the supervisor of
security at the courthouse and is a 20 year veteran of the Sheriff’s
Office. Deputy Smith oversees the day to day security needs at the
courthouse, under the direction of the Sheriff.
Duties
The duties of personnel assigned to the courthouse include, but are not
limited to, searching all individuals entering the courthouse for
weapons and other items which are classified as contraband immediately
upon entering the building while passing through a metal detector which
is monitored by security personnel whenever the courthouse is open to
the public. In addition, there are also security cameras and alarms
located throughout the building which are also monitored at all times.
Routine patrols of the building and the grounds are made, in addition
to, providing security for the Judges and creating a law enforcement
presence within the court rooms during trials.
Notice of Search
If you have business within the Circuit Courthouse, please be
advised that you will be required to allow security personnel to search
all personal belongings and that you will have to pass through a metal
detector as you enter the building. You should also avoid bringing any
of the following items into the courthouse as they are considered
contraband, and will be subject to seizure by the security staff:
Firearms, knives, pagers, cellular telephones, personal defense chemical
sprays (mace), scissors, cameras, tape recorders, chained wallets, nail
files, laser pointers, and any item or substance which is classified
under Maryland Law as illegal.
